It is said marriages are made in heaven. Then there are some who are made in hell. Like the one where a husband in Africa paid hitmen to kill off his wife.
Noela Rukundo’s ordeal began when she flew from her home in Melbourne in 2015, to attend her stepmother’s funeral in her native country Burundi. But during her stay there, she was kidnapped by a group of gunmen, who had been sent to kill her.
Only, the hitmen seemed to have a heart and some principles. So the group of gunmen let the woman go and even blackmailed the husband for extra money.
The hitmen it turned out had been hired by her husband, Balenga Kalala. And in Australia he even organised a funeral for her, believing she had been killed, and claimed she was killed in a tragic accident.
But having been released by the killers, the woman decided to turn the tables on the man who wanted her dead. So she popped in at her own funeral and paid her widower husband a visit.
“I felt like somebody who had risen again,” Noela Rukundo told BBC. “When I get out of the car, he saw me straight away. He put his hands on his head and asked, ‘Is it my eyes? Is it a ghost?’ Surprise! I’m still alive!” she replied.
Eventually, Kalala confessed and pleaded for forgiveness. But, he had no such luck, and she filed a case against him and he has been sentenced to nine years in jail.
