Reportedly, an altercation over the use of a mobile phone triggered the incident. As per a report by Hindustan Times, Major Thapa reprimanded the jawan for using cell phone during duty hours. He warned him of being taken to commanding officers next day for using the phone during duty hours in a sensitive area.

During confiscation of the phone, its screen broke which further irked the jawaan. He lost his cool and allegedly shot Major Thapa five times, killing him immediately.

The police has lodged an FIR and started a probe into the incident.
