Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar has claimed that a “BJP supporter” tried to strangulate him on Pune-bound Jet Airways flight on Sunday. However, the circumstances leading to the alleged assault are not clear yet.

The co-passenger, who allegedly tried to attack Kanhaiya, has been identified as Manas Jyoti Deka.

The incident prompted the airline to deplane both the passengers.

The student leader narrated the incident through a series of tweets :

According to a Hindustan Times report, Jet Airways issued a statement but did not respond to Kanhaiya’s charges against them.

“Some guests on board this morning’s flight Jet Airways fight 9W 618 Mumbai to Pune have been off loaded at Mumbai airport in the interest of operational safety,” the airline said.

Initial police investigations have suggested that it was not a case of assault but a petty argument during which the two men pushed each other. Both Kanhaiya and his alleged attacker are currently at the Mumbai airport.
