While speaking about the recent gang-rape and murder of a 20-year-old woman in Rohtak,  Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi said that parents must keep a close watch on their boys.

Taking a dig at the safety of women in the country, Bedi said that the country’s slogan should be changed from “Beti Bachao –Beti Padhao” to “Beti Bachao Apni Apni”.

According to a report filed by ANI, she said parents must have clarity on whether they want their son to grow up to be “an asset for society or a violator and social threat”.

Bedi went on to criticise those who prefer boys over girls and said, “Daughters are kept under close watch and restraint for fear of their security, boys are let loose to grow up by themselves. They leave home when they want, return if they want and whenever they want? And also in a manner they are in.”

The former IPS officer further said that violence against women will not stop until parents realise their responsibility of ”careful and watchful nurturance”.
