In a shocking case of caste discrimination, a 22-year-old Jat Sikh man from Punjab allegedly committed suicide days after his marriage, after coming to know that his mother-in-law is a Dalit, says a report in Hindustan Times

On Sunday, Manpreet Singh of Sangrur’s Khai village had consumed a poisonous substance. Singh took the extreme step after knowing that the girl he married a few days ago was born to an inter-caste couple.

In his suicide note, Singh has accused matchmaker Gurtej Singh Baba of lying to him about his mother-in-law’s caste. He also said that Baba was paid Rs 45,000 for his job to find a match for him.

“After the marriage, his wife spent two days with him and after that she went to her parents. When he had gone to his in-laws, he came to know that his wife is a Dalit instead of a Jat. He brought her to his home, but after some time he went to the farm and did not return to home. He consumed some poisonous substance,” Piara Singh, the deceased’s brother-in-law, told HT.

Police has registered a case under the Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code at Lehra police station. A police official said Gurtej will be arrested soon, the report added. .
