Meet Bali’s ‘Iron Man’ Who Created A Robotic Arm From Scrap Metals

When it comes to Robotics, most of us believe that only scientists, sci-fi movies or action comics can be great at it. But here is a 31-year-old man from the small village of Nyuhtebel  in Karangasem, Bali, who has invented a mechanical arm out of scrap metal.

Wayan Sumardana, a welder by profession, lost his arm to a paralytic attack six months ago. Even after consulting many doctors, he could not be cured. He lost his job and, consequently, financial hardships increased. Devastated with his medical condition, he embarked upon the idea of creating a ‘bionic arm’.

And Sumardana, a man who has never studied at a university, created the mechanical arm using scrap metals, a lithium battery, gear wheels, dynamo cables and other electronic components.
