How Will Mumbai Blast’s Yasin Bhatkal Get ‘Help From Damascus’ In Jail?

In a shocking revelation, Indian Mujahideen co-founder, Yasin Bhatkal residing in a Hyderabad jail, told his wife in a recent phone call that he would be out soon with ‘help from Damascus.’

Reportedly, the call was intercepted around a month ago. This conversation, which is a indication of the support from the Islamic state to a key conspirator in the Mumbai blasts, has completely appalled the intelligence agencies. This is more so because it was apparently an authorized call from an official phone.

Telangana’s director general of prisons, V K Singh, cited the possibility of the terror accused using a smuggled cellphone and said that authorised calls are always recorded and Bhatkal knows it. His cell in Cherlapally Jail is guarded round-the-clock, reports NDTV .

“So if Bhatkal spoke about getting help from Damascus or was planning to run away from the jail, maybe he was trying to mislead the police,” Singh said.

Earlier mobile pen drives, phones and SIM cards have been recovered from prisoners at Cherlapally jail.

In 2013, 32-year-old Bhatkal was arrested from Bihar by the National Investigation Agency. He is considered to be one of the key conspirators of the Mumbai blasts which took place on July 13, 2011. The blasts at Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Kabutar Khana killed 21 people and injured 141. Singh added that Bhatkal has “permission from court” to talk to his wife Zahida and other family members twice a week. All of his conversations over phone are recorded and phone numbers of relatives are registered by the jail authorities and are made made available to investigating agencies.
