If you are caught breaking traffic rules in Mumbai after January 12, you might want to keep a debit or credit card ready, as the traffic police won’t be asking you to pay the fine in cash. Offenders will soon have to swipe their cards to pay a fine.
The traffic department will finally launch its e-challan system and hand over 1000 machines to constables on January 12, Mid Day reported.
The system is expected to be instrumental in keeping track of offenders who repeatedly break rules. And it will also cost offenders more.
The system which is already active in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, also provides offenders a 15-day payment window through National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) for drivers who will not be carrying their cards.
