After the recent spate of attacks on police personnels, the Mumbai traffic cops could soon be wearing small cameras as part of their uniform to record the behaviour of citizens, reports Indian Express.
The move came after the death of a 50-year-old traffic constable Vilas Shinde, who was attacked after he demanded vehicle documents from a motorist who was riding without a helmet.
The project will soon be formally proposed to the state government.
“Like the initiatives taken by the Hyderabad and Delhi police forces, we too want to equip our traffic police personnel with small cameras that will be pinned to their shirts. These will record audio and video evidence of any untoward activities they are subjected to,” a senior police official told Indian Express.
The police are also looking for options to direct a portion of the funds towards the Close Circuit Television cameras project to kickstart the body cams idea.
The personnels wearing the cameras will be positioned at strategic locations and the mini devices fixed to their uniforms will not only ensure that road safety and traffic rules are being observed but will also keep a tab on their activities, spurring them to perform their jobs efficiently.
The body-worn cameras were first introduced in the country by Hyderabad traffic police in August last year. The decision to acquire them was earlier this month taken up by Kolkata police to check traffic violations.
