It’s good news once again for India from the world of tennis as Sumit Nagal, 18, along with his Vietnamese partner Nam Hoang Ly, won the junior Wimbledon boys’ doubles on Sunday, July 12.
The eighth-seeded young duo defeated the fourth-seeded pair of USA’s Reilly Opelka and Japan’s Akira Santillan 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final that lasted 63 minutes on No.1 Court of the All England Club.

The Indo-Vietnamese duo had defeated fifth seeds Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia and Casper Ruud of Norway 7-6, 3-6, 12-10 to reach the finals.
Yuki Bhambri was the last Indian to taste success at the top level in junior tennis when he won the Australian Open boys singles title in 2009. Ramanathan Krishnan (Wimbledon, 1954), Ramesh Krishnan (French Open and Wimbledon, 1979) and Leander Paes (Wimbledon 1990, US Open 1991) are the other junior Grand Slam singles champions from India.

Sania Mirza had won the Wimbledon girls doubles title in 2003 with Russian partner Alisa Kleybanova. There was little to separate the two pairs as the winners won 65 points, only three more than their rivals. Nagal and his partner broke their opponents in the 10th game of the second set and that proved decisive in the outcome of the match
Earlier, they had beaten Japanese combination of Yusuke Takahashi and Jumpei Yamasaki 6-2, 6-3 on grass Court No.6 of the All England Club to reach the semifinals.
