On National Press Day, Three Nagaland Papers Leave Editorial Pages Blank

On National Press Day, when the President of India spoke on ‘the power of the media should be used to reset our moral compass & promote liberalism, humanism & decency in public life’ , three newspapers of Nagaland left their editorial pages blank.

This was done to protest against the problems they face in maintaining the basic ethics of journalism; objectivity, transparency and freedom of expression.

The Nagaland Page, Eastern Mirror and The Morung Express left their editorial sections blank on Monday.

A journalist at The Morung Express, Vibi Yhokha , reported what happened at a meeting of journalists in a Facebook post .

“The conditions of our times has put us in a world of contradictions and ironies. When the role of Free Press is considered essential in the world of globalisation, we find our space more limited and narrow. At this juncture, only the Free Press can provide an independent voice, democratic space and platform for dialogue. We can no longer just remain commentators of history. We must communicate, we must lead and we must walk with the people.” Akum Longchari, the Editor of The Morung Godse, said at the meeting in Dimapur.
