A 17-year-old girl was humiliated, stripped and her hair shaved off after passengers alleged that she stole a bag belonging to one of the passengers in Howrah-Jodhpur Express.

According to the Times of India, when the parents of the girl denied her Rs 100 for going to a fair, the girl ran away on Sunday. Her father, a daily wage labourer, said his daughter had developed a brain tumour for which she was undergoing treatment and because of which she was mentally unstable.

At some point she boarded the train and was allegedly caught by other passengers of trying to steal a woman’s purse. They then strip-searched her, cut off her hair and when a railway official tried to stop them from doing so, they abused him.

An FIR was filed against the girl for theft on the basis of a complaint filed by the passengers, and the railway official also filed a complaint against six unnamed passengers who had assaulted the girl.
