In a disturbing incident, in-laws of a pregnant woman attempted to set her ablaze because an astrologer predicted that she is carrying a girl child in her womb, reports news18.
The incident took place in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district on August 20.
The woman, Girija, was asleep when her in-laws poured acid and kerosene on her stomach. She immediately cried for help upon which her neighbours barged into the house and rescued her. But by the time they arrived, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law had already fled the scene.
The neighbours thereafter called for an ambulance and also informed Girija’s husband Srinivasulu and her parents about the tragic incident.
A police complaint has been registered at Muthukur police station by Girija’s parents, reports IndiaToday.
The news18 report further says Girija, who already has a daughter, was subjected to constant torture as the in-laws didn’t want a baby girl again. She was even harassed for dowry.
She was also allegedly forced to get an abortion but she refused.
