49 days to go: India is still waiting for the next Milkha Singh

It would be unfair to call ‘The Flying Sikh’ as an unsung hero in Indian sport, thanks to the biopic that Bollywood made on one of India’s greatest athletes of the century. Irrespective of whether one liked the movie or not, it undeniably managed to make Milkha Singh a household name, gave him the recognition he deserved.

Speaking at an event recently, Milkha Singh had this to say:

I failed to win a medal in 1960 Rome Olympics and it hurts me till today. More than half a century has passed since then but no Indian has been able to win an Olympic medal in athletics. It is my last wish to see an Olympic medal around an Indian athletes’ neck on the podium at the Olympic Games.

So, with 49 days to go to Rio 2016, here’s our tribute to the legend who inspired a nation.

The wait continues…
