Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad who defied death for six days after being buried under snow at the Siachen glacier, has passed away at an Army hospital in Delhi on Thursday.
The soldier had been in critical condition and had been under constant observation following intensive care treatment since he was was flown to New Delhi after his rescue on Monday night.
According to a report in the The Hindu, Hanumanthappa’s condition had worsened with multiple-organ dysfunction on Thursday and he had slipped into a deeper state of coma.
On Wednesday, the army said that a team of experts from AIIMS had joined in the efforts to save his life.
Hanumanthappa continued to remain extremely critical with evidence of oxygen deprivation to the brain on CT scan and also with evidence of pneumonia in both lungs.
A soldier of 19 Madras Regiment, Hanumanthappa was rescued alive six days after being buried under 35 feet of snow following an avalanche on the Siachen Glacier on February 3. Nine other soldiers of Indian army had died in the incident.
Hanumanthappa who hailed from Koppal in Karnataka is survived by his wife and daughter.
