In a fresh spate of attacks on telecom operators in Kashmir, two grenades were lobbed at two different mobile company showrooms in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to reports, unidentified gunmen entered two showrooms of Vodafone and Aircel in Srinagar’s commercial hub of Karan Nagar. In both the attacks, the suspected militants asked the employees to vacate the showrooms before the grenades were hurled. The grenades exploded and damaged the shops but no one was hurt.

These attacks follow the brutal ones on people associated with the telecommunication industry in volatile Sopore town by a little known militant outfit, Lashkar-e-Islam. In May and June, six people were killed and several cellphone towers were attacked in North Kashmir.
The attacks are an attempt to disrupt the telecom operations in Kashmir. Following the attacks, security has been beefed up across the city.
Former chief minister Omar Abdullah, soon after the attacks, criticised Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed for his silence. He tweeted that ‘Srinagar is not Sopore’ and this attack can’t be ignored.
“Police is on spot and investigations have begun. We will get you details as soon as we get,” a senior officer told Kashmir Life .
