A few days ago, a newspaper reported about a Pakistani Hindu girl who has shifted to India but is struggling to secure a seat in a Delhi school for several months. On Saturday, foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj stepped in and assured the 16-year-old girl, named Madhu, of action soon.
On Friday, Swaraj sent the girl a message on Twitter, asking her to come to her residence at 7 pm. Swaraj was responding to a tweet by a user appealing Swaraj to help Madhu. Curiously, the user was also taking a jibe at Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
As per an ANI report, Swaraj took up the matter with the Delhi CM and then promised Madhu that her admission procedures would soon be complete.
Madhu told ANI, “I was struggling to get admission in school as I didn’t have an Aadhaar Card. The External Affairs Minister assured me that my admission will be done on Monday.”
As per the Hindu report, Madhu’s family fled Pakistan because of religious persecution and came to Delhi two years ago. But no school is accepting her as she doesn’t have the required documents, having left them all in Pakistan.
Madhu was studying in Class 10 in Pakistan and is seeking admission in Class 9 in Delhi.
Her uncle Jevar told The Hindu, “In [Pakistani] school, she felt unsafe and humiliated. Being a Hindu, she was not allowed to use glass to drink water and would rather use her hands for the purpose. Her teachers maintained distance from her.”
An NGO that is helping her out had written to the Delhi chief minister for help, but so far there haven’t been any reports of any action taken by either him or his government.
