In order to cater to the Telangana diaspora living outside the country, the state government will soon get its own ‘external affairs’ ministry.
The government will now formulate its own NRI policy with incumbent Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s son K Taraka Rama Rao becoming the ‘first’ foreign minister of the state.
“It is a long pending demand from Telangana diaspora across the world that the state must have a dedicated ministry for foreign and NRI affairs. The ministry will promote Telangana as an investment destination and market it the best among the industrialised states in India.” said Boora Narasaiah Goud, Bhuvanagiri MP, who was part of many delegations visiting foreign countries in the past two years, reported The Times of India.
However, Telangana is not the first state to have its own foreign ministry. The government of Kerala also has a specific department named as NORKA which was set up in 1996 to look after the welfare of Non-Resident Keralites. Even the state of Punjab has its own NRI Affairs department which works on similar lines.
It has been said that Telangana’s newly drafted NRI policy is heavily borrowed from Kerala and Punjab and will be finalised after a meeting on July 16.
