New Delhi: More than three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Rs 500 & 1000 currency notes will not be legal tender anymore, Reserve Bank of India is still printing old Rs 500 and 1000 currency notes and all of them are “legal tender”, according to the RBI website.
While the announcement of demonetisation came as a bolt from the blue for many Indians, it seems RBI hasn’t yet woken up to update the new information about the new currency on its website.
Titled as ‘Your Guide to Money Matters’ on the RBI website, the guide – which provides a detailed information to a user about the Indian currency in circulation – doesn’t mention any information about the newly printed Rs 500 and 2000 currency notes issued by the central bank after November 8.

Rather, the guide offers a wide detail on the developments in the history of currency printing in India.
In addition, the website still carries extensive details about the security features and characteristics of old Rs 500 and 1000 currency notes. It also explains different methods through which a “forged” note can be identified.
The guide is also completely silent on any announcement related to the demonetisation and the subsequent orders of government that asked public to deposit their old currency notes.
While there has been no word from the government on printing any other denominations of notes, the currency guide hints that “RBI can also issue notes in the denominations of one thousand rupees, five thousand rupees and ten thousand rupees, or any other denomination that the Central Government may specify.”
Although the website design is different from the current RBI website, the website has the same domain name as that of RBI and a click on homepage takes a user to the current website of RBI.
Calls from ScoopWhoop News to RBI went unanswered when this report was filed.
