In order to rehabilitate inmates and decongest an already crowded jail, Tihar Jail has decided to release 616 inmates by becoming a guarantor for them.

These prisoners are mostly in the age group of 18-20 years and had been granted bail but are still behind bars, due to not having adequate money to pay the surety amount, reports Times of India.

According to the report, this decision was taken during a five-day programme that started on November 26. The jail officials believe that if these inmates are released from the company of other culprits, they have a possibility of leading a better life.

Sudhir Yadav, director general (prisons) while talking about the inmates said that many of them have families and young children, whom they hope to reconcile with someday.
