While other big cities across India are struggling to manage their waste production, Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu has successfully segregated 100% waste at source in various households and institutions across the city.

The model included creating awareness about the campaign among people with help of religious leaders and NGOs through TV and radio channels, reports The Times of India

The campaign that kick-started in October 2016 is being executed by the district’s municipal corporation.

It adopted solid management rules 2016 that made it compulsory for people to separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste items before disposing it. The disposed waste was then collected by city’s sanitation workers working for the municipal corporation.

How is the campaign planned?

While biodegradable waste is collected by the workers on a daily basis, non-biodegradable waste is only collected on Wednesdays. The team charged Rs. 10 per household for their service.
