Two Women Allegedly Commit Suicide At IIT Madras Campus In Span Of 24 Hours

In a shocking incident, two women allegedly committed suicide in IIT Madras campus on Wednesday. One of them is a 34-year-old woman research scholar while the other is a 47-year-old wife of a professor teaching at the institute.

According to the police, G Vijalakshmi, wife of a Physics professor was found hanging in the IIT quarter. In less than three hours, research scholar P Maheswari was found dead in her hostel room, reports NDTV.

Maheswari was married since 12 years and has a son and according to sources, she was “depressed” and had attempted suicide before.

The police is now investigating to find the motive behind the extreme step taken by both of them.

“IIT, Madras, reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar in the campus. The scholar’s family has been informed. The institute is taking necessary action and extending full cooperation to civil authorities,” IIT-M said in a statement.

“The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss,” it said without divulging any further detail.

IIT-M had witnessed suicide of two students in September and October last year.
