The Delhi government will install around 1.5 lakh CCTV cameras in residential and commercial areas across the city by early next year.
As per the plan, around 2,000 cameras will be installed in all 70 assembly constituencies each at a cost of around Rs 250 crore in the first phase.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party had promised to install CCTV cameras across the national capital in the run up to the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections.
Giving details about the government’s proposal, PWD Minister Satyendar Jain said that RWAs and market associations will be asked to monitor CCTV cameras while maintenance work will be looked after by a company which would provide the device.
“We have decided to install 1.5 lakh CCTV cameras in residential and commercial areas across Delhi. 2,000 cameras will be installed in all 70 assembly constituencies each in the first phase,” Jain told reporters.
The PWD minister, whose department has been tasked with installation of the cameras, has written to all MLAs seeking to know the requirement of device in their areas by August 15.
“If the number goes beyond 2,000, legislators can then get CCTV cameras installed through their MLA LAD fund.
“We hope that by October, all tendering process will be completed and thereafter, all 1.5 lakh CCTV cameras will be installed in the next five to six months,” he said.
Jain said that centralised monitoring of CCTV cameras will not be done and instead, it will be carried out by RWAs and market associations at the local level.
“The recording of cameras can be maintained for 30 days.
In New Delhi constituency, CCTV cameras have been installed in several areas,” Jain said.
He said if there is a need, recording will be shared with the police.
