Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and other party leaders were detained on Friday while protesting against demonetisation outside the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) office in Thiruvananthapuram. They were later released without any charges being made against them.

The mass agitation was part of the country-wide stir called by All India Congress Committee from booth to national level against the Narendra Modi government’s anti-people policies and its failure to resolve the problems faced by common man, hit by demonetisation.

Ramesh Chennithala,, the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, also courted arrest outside the RBI office.

Hundreds of party workers from various parts of the district participated in the march. There were reports of scuffle during the protest when party workers tried to break the police barricade and enter the office premises.
