The petition was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal who put up the matter for arguments on the next date of hearing on August 27.

Police claimed a first-year Ph.D student had alleged that Ratan, also a JNU student, raped her on August 20. According to her complaint filed at Vasant Kunj (North) police station, she had posted on her Facebook account that she wanted to watch a movie and asked if anyone had its CD.

It said Ratan apparently messaged her saying he had a copy. Thereafter, he picked her up yesterday on the pretext of giving her a CD of the film and took her to Brahamputra Hostel, where he stays. She alleged that he offered her a spiked drink and raped her. He also threatened her and asked her not to report the matter, she said.

However, the woman approached the police on August 21 and a case of rape was registered and further probe is underway. Students body AISA has claimed that it has taken strong note of the allegations and has expelled Ratan from its membership.
