Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 104 runs in their World Cup opener in Canberra. A 114-run stand between Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim saved the day for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh were in trouble at 119/4 when Shakib 63 and Mushfiqur 71 teamed up to steady things. Their partnership helped Bangladesh post 267/10.

In the process, Shakib – playing in his 142nd match – became the first Bangladeshi to cross the 4000-run mark in ODIs.

On their World Cup debut, Afghanistan impressed but they didn’t have the experience to beat Bangladesh. They were ultimately bundled for 162/10.

Mushfiqur Rahim was adjudged the Man of the Match.
