It’s a widely accepted notion that Canadians are well mannered and going by their only Grand Slam winner’s behaviour, that appears to be true.
19-year-old Bianca Andreescu became the first person of Canadian-origin to win a Grand Slam title in the history of tennis, but that didn’t mean that she’d stop being polite.
Defeating legend Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 in the most special match of her life, Bianca apologised to the crowd for registering a win over their home-athlete.
In the after-match interview, Bianca said:
I know you guys wanted Serena to win, so I’m so sorry.
The clip of her saying those words, soon started trending on Twitter, with people appreciating her humility after executing such a big upset.
Last year, Naomi Osaka had also apologised to the crowd after defeating Serena Williams in a controversial final. “sorry it had to end like this,” she had said.
This year, in another heartwarming gesture, Osaka requested her competitor Cori Gauff to join her for the after-match interview to honour people who had come to support the 15-year-old.
