Shikhar Dhawan’s knock of 137 helped India register their first ever World Cup win over South Africa. The defending champions won the match at the MCG by 130 runs.

Electing to bat, India did not have the best of starts with opener Rohit Sharma getting run out for 0. But Dhawan shared a 127-run partnership with Virat Kohli (46) before putting on another 125 runs with Ajinkya Rahane (79).

India finally finished with 307/7 in 50 overs.

The target was imposing but with the likes of AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla in their ranks, SA could have won it. However, regular wickets kept them under pressure.

Faf du Plessis scored a fighting 55 but 3 wickets from Ravichandran Ashwin and 2 each from Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma saw South Africa get all out for 177.

The result means that the defending champions have beaten South Africa in a World Cup match for the first time in history. They have now won both their 2015 WC matches so far.
