India Creates Football History With Highest Attendance For FIFA U-17 World Cup Ever

The ongoing, 17th edition of FIFA Under-17 World Cup became the most attended in the history of the showpiece event. The event crossed the record set by the first edition of the tournament in China in 1985 during the third-place match between Brazil and Mali at Kolkata. The earlier record attendance stood of 1,230,976.

56,432 fans turned up at the Salt Lake Stadium to watch the Brazil versus Mali match, pushing the total attendance of the Fifa U-17 World Cup in India to 1,280,459. The record for third-highest attendance belongs to Mexico. A total of 1,002,314 spectators attended the 2011 edition.

Kolkata has also witnessed the highest average attendance for World Cup matches. The 66,000 capacity stadium has seen over 5,00,000 fans from 10 matches.
