India defeated South Africa in their first game at the World Cup 2019 by 4 wickets with 15 balls still remaining.

Earlier in the day, South African captain Faf Du Plessis had won the toss and elected to bat on what had then appeared to be a flat track.

However, the infamous clouds of England kept hovering in the skies and the Indian seamers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, proved to be a tough nut for the Proteas to crack.

Paired with Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, who was replacing Mohammed Shami in the team, Bumrah bowled a very tight line and length and gave very little wiggle room for the South African openers, eventually dismissing them both cheaply.

The Indian spinners took the game from there on, bowling with guile and picking apart the South African middle order. Yuzvendra Chahal especially was tough to read and picked 4 wickets.

The Proteas on the basis of a lower order cameo from Chris Morris managed to get 227 on board.

The conditions had not changed when India came to bat but Rohit Sharma, after getting lucky at least 3 times very early in his innings, held one end and scored a century to get India home in the 48th over.

KL Rahul and MS Dhoni also chipped in with important knocks to support Rohit in opening India’s account at the World Cup 2019.
