New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum scored the fastest 50 in World Cup history during his side’s 8-wicket win over England. The Kiwi batsman smashed 50 off just 18 balls, breaking the record he himself had set in 2007 with a 20-ball 50 against Canada.
Chasing a paltry target of 124, McCullum smashed the ball around the park right from the onset. He scored 29 runs off a Steven Finn over, which included 4 consecutive sixes. McCullum eventually finished with 77 off 25 balls. Only 3 of his runs were scored in singles.
This knock is also the third fastest half-century in ODI history. The fastest 50 was scored last month by South African AB de Villiers off 16 balls. Before that, the record belonged to Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya who reached the mark in 17 balls.
