Proteas Skipper Dane Van Niekerk Creates Stunning Record After Taking 4 Wickets For No Runs

West Indies received a thrashing of their life at the hands of South Africa in the ICC Women’s World Cup, getting bowled for just 48 and the Proteas chased it down in 6.2 overs to inflict more embarrassment.

While Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp made early inroads, it was skipper Dane Van Niekerk who finished off the good work with her magical spell. Van Niekerk took four wickets in her spell of 3.2 overs without leaking a single run – it is the first instance of a bowler taking four or more wickets without conceding a single run in all internationals (including men’s and women’s).

The South Africa captain bettered a record first set almost 60 years ago by Richie Benaud. The former Australian skipper took three wickets in 3.4 overs and conceded no runs against India in 1959.

The South African chase was the third-quickest chase in women’s ODI, while the game was the fourth-shortest ODI in women’s cricket history as only 190 deliveries were bowled in the entire match.

A match for the record books!
