Gautam Gambhir (58) got his second consecutive fifty this season and a powerful hand from Andre Russell (17-ball 41*) took the defending champions to 177/6.
RCB received a major jolt in their chase when Virat Kohli (13) was dismissed early but Gayle took charge and got good support from AB de Villiers (13-ball 28).
KKR must be cursing themselves as they had a chance to kill the contest but Morne Morkel dropped Gayle when he was on 33. Now both KKR and RCB have one win each.
