Rising To The Occasion, Vincent Kompany Scores A Late Stunner When It Was Needed The Most

Vincent Kompany’s first goal of this season of Premier League couldn’t have come at a better time. His 70-minute stunner took Man City closer to a second consecutive title with a 1-0 win against Leicester City.

Before I jump to the story behind the winning goal, let’s watch Kompany’s brilliance once.

Okay, let’s watch it again from another angle.

It had been a frustrating evening before Kompany changed it for better. No goals were scored in the first half and it didn’t look like there will be any in the second either.

But with 20 minutes left on the clock, Kompany decided it was time to ruffle some feathers. Even if it were against the wishes of his teammates.

No one wanted him to go for it, but he didn’t listen. Talking to Sky Sports about the same, he said:

Today there was a little bit of frustration because everyone was saying ‘don’t shoot, don’t shoot!’ – I could really hear it. It was annoying me and I said: ‘hold on a second’ – I haven’t come this far in my career for young players to tell me whether I can take a shot or not. So I just took it!

“And today it happened.”

All I’m going to say is I’ve scored goals like that in training. I always hear midfielders saying ‘don’t shoot, play the ball wide’ – for 15 years! I said to them: ‘One of these days I’m going to have a shot from outside the box and I’m going to score a goal and you’re going to be really happy with that one’. And today it happened.

Man City will face Brighton on Sunday and a victory will secure the title for them.
