The English language is a complex, multifaceted beast. It can seem like a breeze one second and then eat you alive with confusion the next. When it comes to the pronunciations of certain cities and countries around the world though, that beast status gets multiplied times a million. Combine that with the fact that the spellings of these places are also ridiculously misleading, and a recipe for disaster while saying ‘Versailles’ or ‘Qatar’ seems unavoidable.
