On 26th January 1950, when the Constitution of Indian came into effect, India declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic, Republic, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as our first President. Since then, we celebrate the Republic Day every year on the 26th of January. In 1951, although we were only 4 years into independence, we picked up the pieces really fast. On the first anniversary of Republic Day, our military might was on display, and soldiers were awarded Param Vir Chakra for their bravery in the J&K operation.

As unbelievable as it might seem today, the 1951 parade and the procession moved through Connaught Place in New Delhi and other principal streets of the city. There was a huge crowd of people greeting the defence forces with cheers along the way.
