Medical Report In Bhopal Gang-Rape Says Survivor Had ‘Consensual Sex’, Rectified Later

A week after a 19-year-old IAS aspirant was assaulted and gang-raped by four men in Bhopal, a medical report about the same stated that the survivor indulged in “consensual sex” with the accused.

The doctor, who administered the medical examination at Sultania Women Hospital, in the initial report, had interchanged the names of the accused and the victim. The report that was filed after the woman went through medical examination on November 1 stated, “Two boys named… took her near the sewage and then into the tunnel where they had sexual intercourse with her with her consent of (sic) will,” Hindustan Times reported

In the report, the doctor had also written “with her consent” instead of “without her consent”. The errors were however rectified later, reports News 18.

Doctor Karan Peepre, Superintendent of Sultania Women Hospital, told ANI that the erroneous report was the work of a newcomer. He added that the error has been rectified and a new report has been issued. However, News18 quoted that unnamed sources alleged that the police were aware of the error in the report, but kept mum. Instead, cops filed another report on the sexual assault of the 19-year-old.

A show cause notice has been served to two doctors for the erroneous report.

The case

On October 31, the 19-year-old girl was stopped on her way home from civil service coaching classes and sexually assaulted by four men near Habibganj railway station in Bhopal. Police had initially refused to file a complaint because they found the case ‘filmy’. The matter was taken seriously only after the girl and her parents themselves caught the two accused and handed them over to the police.
