The Great Depression of the late 20s that lasted till the late 30s was a hellish time for many people. No jobs, no money and most importantly, not much food either. Those who survived it, have so many stories to tell. Clara Cannucciari was about 15 when the Depression hit America. Clara’s mother found inventive ways to stretch the family’s meals and they emerged from the Depression safe and healthy.

In 2007, her grandson Christopher Cannucciari began filming Clara, who was now 91, preparing her mother’s Depression meals and assembled the footage into the YouTube series Great Depression Cooking with Clara .

This is one of her videos where she demonstrates how to cook what she calls The Poor Man’s Meal .

Sadly, Clara passed away on November 29, 2013. She was 98. The last video her grandson uploaded on her channel was one where she showed us how to cook Twice baked potato .

Clara, you were awesome. You were a brave survivor. Thank you.
