Pope Francis Shares The First Track From ‘Wake Up!’, His First Prog-Rock Album

Raj Das

Pope Francis is about to embark on a historic visit to the United States. Seen as one of the more liberal pontiffs ever, Pope Francis is about to talk about climate change and poverty, and that means he’ll have to confront right-wing politicians and clerics, who have been known to claim that climate change is a myth.

But another piece of exciting news is taking over the Internet right now- Pope Francis is set to release a prog-rock inspired music album!

His message of hope, faith and humanity will now spread through a progressive-rock-infused album titled Wake Up! , a collaboration with Being Digital. The record will feature Pope Francis’s sacred hymns and excerpts of his most moving speeches in Italian, English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Popes have long dabbled in music: Pope Benedict XVI’s voice was featured on 2009’s Music From The Vatican: Alma Mater , and Pope John Paul II appeared on albums like 1999’s Abba Pater . Pope Francis, however, may be the first pope to rock. His Holiness released “Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!”, a prog-inflected song that features an address he made in English, as well as his singing voice.

Here’s the album tracklist –

1. “Annuntio Vobis Gadium Mangum” 2. “Salve Regina” 3. “Laudato Sie…” 4. “Poe Que’ Sufren Los Ninos” 5. “Non Lasciatevi Rubare La Speranza!” 6. “La Iglesia No Puede Ser Una Ong!” 7. “Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!” 8. “La Fa Es Entera, No Se Licua!” 9. “Pace! Fratelli!” 10. “Per La Famiglia” 11. “Fazei O Que Ele Vos Disser”

Wake Up! releases worldwide on November 27th.
