They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. While we might completely agree with this statement, how many of us would dedicate our entire livelihood to take care of this canine best friend of ours?

This Humans Of Bombay post talks about a man who did not only dedicate his entire life in loving these four-legged adorable creatures but also had a special connection with dogs since he was a kid.

Humans Of Bombay

Nicholas discovered his love for animals right from childhood. His will to help all those animals in need and his unconditional love for his pet dog Fluffy made everyone think that nurturing animals is his true calling.

My father gifted me my first pet, ‘Fluffy’, he lived with us for 19 years, and we were inseparable. Apart from having pets myself, I’d also started treating animals who were hurt. This one time, it was late at night and I was out, when I saw this tiny puppy who was injured badly. I couldn’t help myself so I got him home, and cared for him until he was okay. Everyone thought I’d either become a vet, considering how much I loved animals.

He too wanted to do something for animals but that wasn’t going to provide him with a stable livelihood. So he secured a job in an ad agency doing what he liked. But his love for animals was far greater than what his stable job was provided him.

But I did a course in graphics and animation because I loved drawing and sketching. I got my certification and even got a job in that field. After this, my career took off and over the years I became a creative lead at an ad agency, but something still didn’t feel right. The feeling of wanting to do something with animals was always there, but I didn’t know if and how I could make a career out of it.

Nicholas finally decided that it is time he did something for the dogs, so he started with a part-time job. He worked day and night and shuffled through his regular job and his part-time job of training dogs every day. Even though it was really tough for him, this is what brought him happiness.

I knew basic dog training from my own experience, but to understand dogs better I enrolled for a canine behaviour course. I’d make time for it even with a full-time job, and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was only when my mentor asked me to take up training dogs, did I take the first step. One after the other, I trained dogs after work. I’d wake up early, go home late, barely get any sleep.

After struggling with both jobs for a while, Nicholas finally decided that it was time to go for his passion over a job that didn’t really make him happy anymore. No matter how hard it was, his wife supported his passion for dogs and realized how content it made him.

When it got too difficult to manage both, I told my wife that I wanted to quit and take up canine behaviour training full-time. My family was hesitant, leaving my job would mean leaving a stable career. But my wife supported me, and I realised that a life filled with passion would trump over every other benefit I could every get from my job. It’s been 4 years since I’ve made the switch and I haven’t looked back ever since!

In the end, it all comes down to waking up happy to a job that fills your heart with passion and fulfilment. Nicholas’s love for doing something for the animals was so strong that no matter what other job he would’ve chosen, his heart would’ve always lied where the animals were.

“My father gifted me my first pet, ‘Fluffy’, he lived with us for 19 years & we were inseparable. Apart from having pets myself, I’d also started treating animals who were hurt. Everyone thought I’d either become a vet, considering how much I loved animals or do something else in that field — so I took up Science. I did it for a while & when I couldn’t cope, I shifted to Arts. I also did a course in graphics & animation & even got a job in that field. All through this, I continued tending to dogs, whenever I could. My career took off & over the years I became a creative lead at an ad agency, but something still didn’t feel right. There are days where I don’t break even, but it doesn’t compare to the sense of fulfillment I have when I’m working with dogs. I wake up everyday knowing that I’m actually pursuing my calling & not just doing ‘a job’. I’m living a life that brings my passion, hope, dreams & contentment & now livelihood – all on the same page!” #LiveMore
