Vincent Van Gogh is someone who needs no introduction. He was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who created about 2,100 artworks which included landscapes, still life, portraits and self-portraits that were characterized by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Sorrow (1882) The Potato Eaters (1885) Sunflowers (1887) Bedroom in Arles (1888) and The Starry Night (1889) are some of this notable artworks that are still considered masterpieces. But, during his lifetime, he was seen as a madman and a failure. It was only after his death that he was seen as a misunderstood genius. His work came into the limelight during the 20th century when elements of his painting style were incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. He died when he was only 37 years old due to mental illness and poverty. Today, his works are among the world’s most expensive paintings to have ever been sold at an auction. Now, his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, in Amsterdam, which holds the world’s largest collection of his paintings and drawings. Here are some quotes by him that will inspire you to push your limits and put your best foot forward.
