By now, even the most casual fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are familiar with its mid-credit and post-credit scenes. Avengers: Endgame was the exception to that rule, but Far From Home has brought the MCU back to form.

It goes without warning, there are huge spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home in this article. So if you haven’t seen it, swing away.

The latest installment of the wall-crawler has 2 post-credit scenes, both of which have big implications for the future of Spider-Man and the entire MCU. So let’s dive in.

Den Of Geek

1. In the mid-credit scene, Peter Parker has his secret identity outed to the entire world, by none other than J. Jonah Jameson.

The movie ends with Spider-Man taking his new girlfriend, MJ, swinging through the city of New York. By the end of it, MJ is thoroughly convinced she’s not going to try that again. But before we can move on, everyone’s attention is grabbed by a huge TV screen that’s airing footage of the battle in London, released by Mysterio.

Polygon

The footage is being aired by none other than J. Jonah Jameson (I know, right?) who’s played by JK Simmons (I KNOW RIGHT?). Mysterio’s footage has obviously been edited by his team to make it seem like Mysterio vanquished the Elementals, while Spider-Man was responsible for the drone attack.

GeekyTyrant

Jameson rants on about Earth’s greatest hero (Mysterio) and the world’s newest villain (Spider-Man), and then leaves his biggest revelation. Mysterio lets the world know that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Or Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Whichever way works for you. The point is, this completely changes his path forward.

The world may not know as the ‘friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’ anymore, everyone (including potential villains) knows who his family (and potential weak points) are, and it brings Jameson into the MCU.

But mainly, as so brilliantly pointed out by Tasha Robinson on The Verge, it almost mirrors the first movie in the MCU, Iron Man. Peter Parker spends all of Far From Home trying to live up to being the ‘new Iron Man’ but fails. Iron Man ended with Tony Stark’s now famous line, “I am Iron Man”, outing his identity to the world. So does Far From Home, but not on Peter Parker’s terms. Marvel is obviously building Spider-Man as the new face of the MCU and only time will tell if it works.

2. In the post-credit scene we find out that Nick Fury and Maria Hill were actually Skrulls!

Now, this one was a doozy. We catch up with Fury and Hill as they’re driving in the city, when both of them suddenly change into the Skrulls, Talos and his wife Soren (whom you might remember from Captain Marvel). This does two things.

Syfy

It explains away why Nick and Maria were so inept during the entire course of this movie. I mean come on, would Nick Fury have really believed everything Quentin Beck said about being from another dimension without double or even triple checking it? Wouldn’t Maria Hill have done her own digging and warned him? But two Skrulls who were impersonating them, who didn’t know much about how Fury worked, might’ve.

Game Spot

And secondly, this paves the way for a possible on-screen adaptation of the Secret Invasion storyline. Long story short, the plot deals with a long term invasion by the Skrulls where they secretly replace super heroes. We have proof that two Skrulls could impersonate Fury and Hill with no one being the wiser. What’s to stop a ‘bad’ Skrull from doing the same?

Inverse

Oh, and where’s the real Nick Fury? He’s chilling on board a Skrull spaceship. He gets up, walks around shouts out to everyone to ‘get back to work’. What does that mean? Your guess is as good as mine.
