2018 was decidedly one of the better years for Hindi cinema, where movies of different genres delighted the audience, and also raised our expectations about the standard of movies that Bollywood can produce. 

Here are 22 movies that we are excited for in 2019: 

1. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

Starring Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao in lead roles, the hilariously adorable trailer already has us excitedly waiting for the movie to drop. The coming-of-age romantic drama is written by Gazal Dhaliwal (co-writer for Qarib Qarib Singlle and Lipstick Under My Burkha), and appears to be a same-sex love story (yay 2019!). The movie releases on February 1, 2019.

2. Uri: The Surgical Strike

Based on the 2016 surgical strikes by the Indian Army, and starring Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam in the lead, this is the first major motion movie releasing in 2019, on January 11. And an action-packed trailer showcasing Vicky Kaushal in a whole different avatar gives us something to look forward to. 

3. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

This Kangana Ranaut starrer movie is an action-packed historical biopic on the life of Rani Laxmi Bai. Based on an extraordinary subject, we hope it stays true to the spirit of the original rebellion that Rani Laxmi Bai led. The film releases on January 25. 

4. Brahmastra

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles, Brahmastra is a fantasy movie and the first part of an expected trilogy. While Bollywood’s tryst with fantasy movies has not always been successful, the director-actor combination definitely has us looking for out for this one. 

5. Gully Boy

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, and starring Ranveer Singh and Ali Bhatt in lead roles, Gully Boy is a musical drama based on the life of Mumbai street rappers. Both, the lead pair that’ll come together for the first time on screen and the subject of the movie, have us waiting for the trailer excitedly. The movie will release on February 14. 

6. Shakeela 

Based on the life of the ‘adult movie’ actor Shakeela, this is a biopic with Richa Chaddha in the lead role. Shakeela was a popular star in the Malayalam film industry, and the movie focuses on her formative year and eventual stardom.

7. Kalank

Ever since the ensemble cast for Kalank was announced, the period drama had cinephiles keeping a watch on any information about it. Directed by Abhishek Varman (of 2 States fame), the movie is produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala. The movie is expected to hit the screens in April 2019. 

8. The Sky Is Pink

Written by Juhi Chaturvedi (of Piku and October fame), and starring Zaira Wasim, Priyanka Chopra, and Farhan Akhtar, this biographical drama is based on the life of motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary- who was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. The movie is being directed by National Film Award winner Shonali Bose (of Amu and Margarita With A Straw fame). 

9. Kabir Singh 

The official remake of Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy, the movie stars Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in lead roles. The movie revolves around an alcoholic surgeon with anger management issues, and the original story was lauded for the exceptional acting by the lead actor, Vijay Deverakonda. It will be interesting to see whether Shahid Kapoor’s performance and the movie, lives up to the original. The movie is expected to release on June 21.

10. Kizie Aur Manny 

The official remake of The Fault in Our Stars (based on John Green’s novel of the same name), the romantic tragicomedy stars Sushant Singh Rajput and debutant Sanjana Sanghi in the lead roles. Considering both the movie and the novel garnered immense popularity, it will be interesting to see if the Hindi adaptation lives up to the expectations. 

11. Badla

The official remake of the Spanish Thriller Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest), the movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Taapsee Pannu. Even though Shah Rukh Khan’s latest brush with BO has resulted in more zeroes than his fans would have wanted, Badla still has us rooting for an entertainign thriller. The movie is expected to release on March 08. 

12. Dolly, Kitty, Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare

It’s an upcoming comical satire, starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar, and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava (of Lipstick Under My Burkha fame). Produced by Balaji Telefilms, the movie also stars Kubbra Sait and Vikrant Massey, and the talent on board is enough to raise our hopes that this will be a fun entertainer. 

13. Mental Hai Kya

This is an adult black comedy, crime thriller starring Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles. Written by Kanika Dhillon, of Manmarziyaan fame, the first look of the movie hints at a crazy tale that has us looking forward to watching this duo share screen space again. 

14. Chhichhore

An upcoming comedy starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, Chhichhore is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and the first look is interesting, to say the least. The movie is scheduled to release on August 30. 

 

15. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar

The Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra starrer is a romantic, black comedy thriller, directed by Dibakar Banerjee. A Yash Raj production, the movie brings back Arjun and Parineeti together on screen for the third time.

16. Jabariya Jodi

Based on the tradition of groom kidnapping prevalent in Bihar, Jabariya Jodi is a comedy starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra.

20. The Zoya Factor

Based on Anuja Chauhan’s novel of the same name, The Zoya Factor is an upcoming sports romantic comedy, starring Dulquer Salman and Sonam Kapoor in the lead roles. The novel was immensely popular when it first came out, and we’re excited to see if the movie adaptation stays true to the spirit of the novel. The movie is presently scheduled to release on April 5. 

17. Arjun Patiala

Another romantic comedy, Arjun Patiala stars Diljit Dosanjh and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles. While Diljit Dosanjh has starred in his fair share of Punjabi romantic comedies, this is his second Hindi movie in the genre, after Phillauri. The movie is scheduled to release on May 03. 

18. Made in China 

Starring Rajkummar Rao, Mouni Roy and Boman Irani in the lead roles, Made in China is an upcoming drama movie. It is directed by Mikhil Musale, whose Gujarati film Wrong Side Raju won the National Film Award. The movie is scheduled to release on August 31, 2019. 

19. Bombairiya

With a talented star cast that includes Radhika Apte, Adil Hussain, Ravi Kishan, and others, the trailer of this black comedy definitely reminds you of Delhi Belly. The movie is all set to release on January 11, and the chaotic tale will be pitted against Uri at the Box Office.

20. Soni (Netflix)

One of Netflix India’s first original film of the year, Soni is the story of two female police officers coming together to fight the rising crimes against women. Directed by Ivan Ayr, the movie has already won awards at film festivals and stars Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra in the lead roles. It will be available on Netflix from January 18.

21. Sonchiriya

Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Bajpyaee, Bhumi Pednekar and our favorite Bollywood villain, Ashutosh Rana, Sonchiriya appears to be a violent, Indian dacoit drama. As far as the teaser is concerned, the movie delivers in terms of both gore and menace. The movie will release in February 2019. 

22. The Fakir of Venice

This Farhan Akhtar and Annu Kapoor starrer comedy has finally got a release date, ten years after it was made. A revamped trailer was released recently, and suffice to say the movie looks like an interesting tale indeed. The movie is all set to release on January 18.

A special mention to the action-comedy Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, starring debutant Abhimanyu Dassani and Radhika Madan. It has already won the People’s Choice Award: Midnight Madness at TIFF, and we’re now hoping to watch the interesting story on the silver screen. 

It looks like Bollywood is all set for an interesting year across genres, and we can’t wait to see what magic unfolds this year.
