And while we’re still trying to battle through the pain of watching one of our favourite shows come to an end, George RR Martin has revealed that his books may not end the same way as the series.

In a blog post, Martin recounted his first meeting with the show’s creators, the question that convinced him they could make the series, and everything that went on after that.

I sat down for the first time with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for a lunch that lasted well past dinner. I asked them if they knew who Jon Snow’s mother was. Fortunately, they did. That was how it started. It ended last night.

He bid an emotional goodbye to the creators, the crew, and the actors who helped bring his work to life. And then talked about how for him, ‘winter is coming’, still. And it may not have the same end as the show at all. 

How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.

He gave a little context as to why the books and series may differ, as they have been for some of the later seasons. And he also explained that all the characters that never made it to the show, will obviously, have an effect on how the story goes forward in the books. 

David and Dan had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books. And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…

And before you ask, he already answered the question about what will be the ‘real ending’. 

I’ll write it (the ending). You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet.
