If you are a movie buff besides the excitement about Diwali, choosing between Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay must have left you in dilemma. Filmmakers intelligently plan their releases around festivals to rake in the moolah. Interestingly, there were a lot of Diwali clashes in previous years too, and the box office results ranged from stupendous success to horrendous failures.

Here is the list of few big movies clashing with each other during Diwali:

1. Year 1993 – Baazigar Vs Bedardi

You may recall Baazigar but not Bedardi. Baazigar gave us the evergreen jodi of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. It also had Shilpa Shetty who made her Bollywood debut. Baazigar was a thriller on the premise of a man seeking revenge. It had cult dialogues and performances that our etched in our minds. Bedardi starred Urmila Matondkar and Ajay Devgn. Most of us have not even seen this film. We may have too google it, let’s not even bother. Both films stayed true to their name.

2. Year 1995 – DDLJ Vs Yaarana

You must not remember Yaarana now, because Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge had such a blockbuster effect that it is still one of the cult romantic Bollywood films. While this Aditya Chopra film turned out to be the biggest hit that year, Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Rishi Kapoor starrer Yaarana failed to make an impact. Oh wait, the Mera Piya Ghar Aaya Oh Ramji song was from Yaarana. Rings a bell?

3. Year 2000 – Mohabbatein Vs Mission Kashmir

SRK’s yet another romantic film helmed by Aditya Chopra, Mohabbatein clashed with Hrithik Roshan’s Mission Kashmir. Despite a powerful story with good performances, Mission Kashmir managed average box-office performance. Mohabbatein may have not made the same impact as DDLJ despite having Amitabh Bachchan in a pivotal role. But in this box-office clash it made more money compared to Mission Kashmir.

4. Year 2004 – Veer-Zaara Vs Aitraaz

Veer-Zaara was a quintessential Yash Chopra romance on the backdrop of partition. Aitraaz was a more risque, typical Abbas-Mastan thriller. Both films had great performances to begin with. Unfortunately, when it came to making the profits, the audience preferred making a beeline for Veer-Zaara compared to Aitraaz which appeared more risqué from its trailers and publicity. After all it was Diwali time, and families trusted Yash Chopra’s clean cinema over Abbas-Mastan’s bold Aitraaz.

5. Year 2006 – Don Vs Jaaneman

We know that Salman Khan prefers Eid any day over Diwali for the release of his film. But 2006 had him pitted against none other than Shah Rukh Khan. And mind you, he also had Khiladi Kumar for company. Don Vs Jaaneman. Unfortunately, the audience preferred a good edge-of-the-seat remake compared to a dull script that could not even hold the audience’s attention for two long. While Shah Rukh soared, Salman-Akshay were left sinking at the box-office.

6. Year 2007 – Om Shanti Om Vs Saawariya

It was the Diwali that gave Bollywood 3 new stars. Deepika Padukone made her debut in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om. Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor debuted together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya.

Deepika Padukone struck gold in her first film. Sonam and Ranbir had to wait longer to taste success. As they say, the rest is history.

7. Year 2010 – Golmaal 3 Vs Action Replayy

Golmaal franchise was a hit-maker in itself. Just like its previous two installments Golmaal 3 was a hit at the box office despite having Akshay Kumar-Aishwarya Rai starrer, Action Replayy. The audience preferred a tried and tested Golmaal compared to Action Replayy that left the audience in a dilemma.

8. Year 2012 – Jab Tak Hai Jaan Vs Son Of Sardar

Jab Tak Hai Jaan will always be remembered as Yash Chopra’s last film. Despite beating Son Of Sardar in box-office collections, Jab Tak Hai Jaan will not be remembered as a cult classic like Yash Chopra’s other films. Having said that, both films clashing at the Box Office made profits. But then, the winner certainly was Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

9. Year 2016 – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Vs Shivaay

Result awaited. What do you think?
