An ex-Doordarshan anchor, Kanchan Nath (58), was crushed to death under a coconut tree that fell straight on her head while she was on a morning walk. She was a resident of Chembur and the incident happened on July 20. The horrific incident was caught on a nearby security camera, reports The Times of India.

According to NDTV, in the video, Kanchan is seen wearing a blue t-shirt and black trousers, when the tree crashes on her. She immediately falls on the ground. Passers-by witness the incident and rush to her rescue.

She was then taken to a hospital and was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit. She succumbed to her injuries this morning.

Rajat Nath, Kanchan’s husband, said, “This incident happened because the BMC did not allow the society to cut the tree, despite being informed.”

The Chembur police will investigate if there is negligence in the case, reported India Today.

Meanwhile, an application filed to cut the same tree on February 17 has to come to light.  A fee of Rs. 1,380 was also deposited. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials had inspected the tree and told the applicant, one Avinash Pol, that it was still healthy.

The local councillor Asha Marathe has written to the BMC demanding action and accused officials responsible of being negligent. She has also demanded an inquiry against them.
