Indian columnist, humorist, writer and a noted playwright, Taarak Mehta passed away at the age of 87 after prolonged illness.

Popular SAB TV show 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' is based on the author's Gujarati column 'Duniya Ne Undha Chashma' that first appeared in Chitralekha in March 1971.

The writer is survived by daughter, Ishani, from his first marriage.
