Coinciding with India’s 70th Independence Day, the Hindi version of Gurinder Chaddha directorial film Viceroy’s House, named Partition: 1947  was released in the country a few days back.

As the title suggests, the historical drama starring Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Huma Qureshi and Manish Dayal in the lead role, narrates the traumatic story of people during the Partition of India in the year 1947.

But, Pakistan has banned it’s release reportedly over “misrepresentation” of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Here’s a look at other recent Indian films that have been banned from being released in Pakistan for a variety of reasons:

1) Dangal

Directed by Nitish Tewari, the sports biopic based on the life of former wrestler Mahavir Phogat worked wonders at the box-office. Besides being the highest-grossing sports movie of 2017, the film Dangal is also the fifth highest-grossing non-English film in history.

The film also starring Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, didn’t release in Pakistan as the censor board had demanded the removal of scenes with Indian National Flag and Indian National Anthem.

2) Jolly LLB 2

Subhash Kapoor’s judicial satire-drama starring Akshay Kumar and Huma Qureshi was banned by the Examining Committee of the Pakistan Censor Board reportedly because the film addresses the sensitive Kashmir issue.

The plot of the movie revolves around a case of an innocent man who is killed and declared a Kashmiri militant, while the real Kashmiri militant goes into hiding in Uttar Pradesh.

3) Raees

Rahul Dholakia’s film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Mahira Khan was banned in Pakistan due to its ‘objectionable’ content.

An official of the Punjab censor board had reportedly said “the content undermines Islam, and a specific religious sect, (It also) portrays Muslims as criminals, wanted persons and terrorists”.

Following Indo-Pak tensions, the screenings of Indian films were suspended in Pakistan for four months. Raees and Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil were the first films to be released in the country after the ban was lifted. However, the censor board later decided to ban Raees on the basis of its content.

4) Neerja

A biopic based on a 23-year-old brave flight attendant who sacrificed her life for saving about 300 passengers from hijackers in 1986, has undoubtedly been an outstanding film of the year 2016.

Even Sonam Kapoor received a National Award for portraying the role of Neerja Bhanot. However, the film couldn’t get its theatrical release in Pakistan for allegedly showing the country in bad light.

5) Udta Punjab

While Pakistan censor board banned Udta Punjab in the country due to the use of abusive language, director Abhishek Chaubey and Anurag Kashyap had a tough time in getting their film released in India.

Film starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh courted a major controversy after it ran into trouble with the CFBC for its story which was based on the drug abuse by the youth in the state.

6) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Exhibitors and distributors in Pakistan had voluntarily suspended the release of Indian films in the country due to escalating tensions between the two countries. And hence, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil couldn’t get its theatrical release.

Karan Johar’s film had also faced hurdles in getting a smooth release in India. It had invited wrath from political parties in Maharashtra as the film featured Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. The calls on social media to boycott the film was followed by a theatre owners’ body refusing to screen the film. It was only after the director assured Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, they would not work with Pakistani artistes in future that the film got its theatrical release in India on schedule.

7) Shivaay

The film directed and produced by Ajay Devgn may have got a smooth release in India but was banned in Pakistan again because of the border conflict. The film revolved around a skilled mountaineer who turns into a destroyer when his daughter gets kidnapped by flesh traders and he is left helpless.

This year, Shivaay had also won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects.
