I’ve seen a lot of women who feel sorry for the things they do – not big, important things which have some major significance or consequence in their lives – but small, random things that they do just because they want to. What’s the point? Too often, women apologise for the things they do, and sometimes even for the things they don’t, merely out of compulsion. But it’s high time we shed our inhibitions and stopped being sorry for being ourselves. Let’s start with these 15 things:

I am sorry for being overdressed, I am sorry for drinking, I am sorry for spending money on myself, I am sorry for being single.

1. Pampering yourself

Why do you have to feel guilty about taking time out for yourself? Going to the parlour, getting a new haircut, sitting in a spa – do whatever you please – and stop feeling bad about spending some money.

2. Being girly

Wear those sky high heels if you want to, put on the darkest shade of red lipstick if you like, wear that fancy dress to work if you please. But please stop being sorry about being girly.

3. Not being girly

You don’t have to dress up according to somebody’s expectations. Wear those pants if you want to, cut your hair short, or not – do whatever you want to.

4. PMSing

“I am so sorry. I can’t do this because I am on my period.”

So it’s that time of the month again and you’re a little cranky. But so what? You don’t have to be sorry for something that happens to you naturally.

5. Saying no

You have all the right to say no to something that you don’t like. Stop feeling sorry for it.

6. Having guy friends

I don’t even need to explain this one. We live in the 21st century!

7. Coming home late

As long as you make sure you’re safe, you don’t have to be sorry to anyone for coming late.

8. Putting yourself before him

While it’s great to do things for your significant other, don’t forget yourself in the relationship. There is nothing wrong in putting yourself first.

9. For being skinny, fat, or muscular

Body shaming is not cool. You don’t have to look like some people expect you to. Be skinny, fat or fit but please don’t be ashamed about it!

10. Eating like a pig

Why is there so much hype about eating to your fullest? Food is just as essential for men, as it is for women. Then why be sorry for it?

11. Being selfish

I say if you don’t love yourself, why would anybody else? It’s okay to be a little selfish at times.

12. Being single

Guys will come and go, so enjoy the time while you are single. It won’t come back.

13. Taking a leave

Don’t work when you don’t have to. You have earned these leaves by toiling day in and day out. You deserve it.

14. Drinking and/or smoking

Smoking isn’t good for our health, and neither is drinking. But why should we not do it just because we’re women. We’re all adults and know what is right for us, and what’s not. As long as you know that, you don’t need to apologise for anything.

15. For being emotional

Women experience a whirlwind of emotions and are often guilty about the same. You really don’t have to say sorry if you’re genuinely feeling something.

And most importantly, for listening to what your heart says. Stand tall, stand confident!
