However, things were not as great 20 years ago, when Kalavati Mistry and Miriam Jefferson met during a training course. They fell for each other but they needed to hide their love for the longest time. The fact that they were a homosexual couple and belonged to separate faiths was problematic for the society back then.

In fact, Mistry, who is now 48, opened up about her sexuality to her family only recently. She told the Independent:

“It had been very difficult for me as an Asian gay woman. I knew from a very young age that I was gay. I knew during my teenage years that I was and it was very difficult, trying to tell your friends and family and honour the traditions…Once I told my friends and family a few years ago, they were very warm, welcoming and embracing to Miriam, which is very important…I hope many many gay people — no matter what religion or culture they’re in — are in loving relationships.”

The happy couple made history in Britain recently by becoming the first interfaith lesbian couple to tie the knot. And that too in a traditional Hindu wedding!

Both the brides looked beautiful in their bridal sarees, a look that they completed with garlands and mangalsutras.

The couple married at the Chutney Ivy restaurant in Leicester and also received a beautiful wedding cake.

We hope the couple’s union gives power to all other same-sex couples and works as an example that in the end, love really wins over it all.
